Mediation for couples – victim of abuse and perpetrator of abuse
Since May 2015 Bureau for consulting, directing, and support of victims of home abuse has been functioning at Fund IGA. One of the services the Bureau delivers is mediation of couples that admit that they have a similar problem.
Mediation in general is a conversation between two arguing sides in which a third person also takes part – that is the mediator. The mediator is now allowed to take any side but they have to help the arguing people to reach a conclusion which is mutually beneficial. Mediation has a lot of advantages and one problem – a person has to try to find a solution of the problem and not to want to punish. They have to accept the reality and find a solution, admit that they have a problem, and find a solution.
The psychological consulting of couples which is delivered at Fund UGA aims at establishing the relations in the family and dealing with the problem. During the meetings the couples share the reasons that have lead to the acts of abuse which are usually alcohol addiction, jealousy, character weaknesses, financial problems, lack of confidence and qualities for dealing with the problem, or lack of trust in the relationship.
The psychologist works to build motivation in both the victim and the perpetrator to deal with the problem and take the initiative for a positive change. Up to now 5 couples have gone through mediation conducted by a psychologist from Fund IGA. The psychological consulting of the couples has a duration of 3 sessions each of which continues for 2 hours.
By the finalization of the project at the beginning of 2017, 10 more couples have to go through mediation delivered by an expert at the Bureau for consulting, directing, and support in Fund IGA.
The service has been delivered within Project “Against the Invisible Violence” funded by the Ministry of Justice, by virtue of article 19, paragraph 3 from the Regulation for enforcing the Law for Protection against Home Abuse.
