Project “To serve and correct”

Continuance:1.03.2007 - 31.03.2008
Source of funding: UNDEF
Main aim: To improve the accountability and transparency of the local administration by institutionalizing and building the capacity of municipal ombudsmen; To foster the access of citizens of local communities to one of the most democratic institutions in the contemporary world – the Ombudsman.
Specific objectives:
- raising the awareness among citizens in 12 target municipalities with a total population of at least 250,000 people, so that a large part of Bulgarian society can benefit from the project results;
- training 24 NGO representatives from target municipalities on the model of institutionalization of local public mediators developed by IGA;
- initiating, monitoring and facilitating 12 procedures for election of local public mediators and at the same time 12 local advocacy campaigns carried out (aimed at election of at least 6 ombudsmen covering a territory with a total population of at least 250 000 people);
- raising capacity of the elected local public mediators through training and popularization of their activity;
- popularizing project results at a special conference and issue of a specialized publication.
