Announcement of the Declaration for improvement of the human rights in prisons towards the Bulgaria, Turkey and Romania
Today in the Information center at European Union in Sofia an closing meeting regarding the project “International conference “Improving human rights in Bulgarian, Romanian and Turkish prisons through modern methods of treatment, improvement of living conditions and protection of minorities” The project was implemented from Fund – IGA and Penal reform international – Bucharest and was financially supported by Phare program – Small projects on the European commission. In the presence of representatives of the embassy of Republic of Turkey in Bulgaria, Ministry of Justice, General Directorate “Execution of penalties”, Sofia central prison, District Probation Service – Sofia and media we’re presented the results from the conference. For the first time the declaration from the forum was publicly announced towards them three governments of the participating countries. Fund – IGA presented its new edition, which documents all reports and presentations of the participants in the International conference. The edition was prepared from IGA’s team and printed in Pazardjik. The published reports we’re on four languages – Bulgarian, English, Turkish and Romanian. The reports are interesting and concerns all specialists and experts, working in the penitentiary system. Themes connected with treatment methods in prisons, improvement of the life standards in them and also protection of the minorities in detention facilities etc. we’re developed.
Fund IGA и Penal Reform International - Romania – organized an international conference
International Conference Improving Human Rights in Prison in Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey, was held within 21st – 23rd of June in Sofia- Tsarigradsko selo complex. The conference was organized by the crime Prevention Fund- IGA and Penal Reform International - Romania.
The forum was carried out under the patronage of Prof. Georgi Petkanov- Minister of Justice of the Republic of Bulgaria and is implemented with the financial support of the European Commission- Brussels. About 60 people participated in the prestigious forum. Main issues discussed by the participants were the Modern treatment methods in prisons ( 31st of June, 2006) Improving Living Conditions in Prisons ( 22nd of June, 2006) ; Protection of minorities in prisons (22nd of June, 2006) These issues were discussed in light of relevant European and international standards, human rights situation in the three penalty execution systems and common perspectives and challenges in front of the three countries by reference to their upcoming EU memberships. Issues were discussed from three point of views- Europe, state administration of Bulgaria, Romania and Turnkey and rights defending organizations in the three countries. Their aim was to reach a constructive dialogue and cooperation on a national and international level. Conference was ended by a discussion of plan for declaration preparation with recommendations to the government of the tree countries for improving human rights in prison system in Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.
